Allied Arts

Explore and create with fellow artists and designers. Our High School Design Studios are intended for students interested in exploring diverse and specific components of design. Led by professional architects, artists and designers, activities are designed to strengthen creative problem solving and visual literacy, while deepening participants’ understanding of the design field. Join us for one or all three of our Design Studios.

Design in Wright’s first home and studio and draw inspiration from the collaborative spirit of Wright’s architects and the allied arts.

Session 1: Architects & Draftsmen

Experience Wright’s architecture studio as it was then and as it is today as you cultivate your own drafting skills with a visiting architect.

Architectural design and its practice has evolved over time through cultural shifts and technological advancements. However, at its core, the design process will forever include collaboration. This summer, work in Wright’s drafting room and explore the collaborative spirit of the many architects and draftsmen who worked there including Walter Burley Griffin, William Drummond, Isabel Roberts, and the first practicing woman architect in America, Marion Mahony.

Session 2: Forms & Fixtures

Throughout history, architects and artists have worked alongside one another to create patterns and ornament to enhance the design of structures. For nearly 20 years, Wright collaborated with sculptor Richard Bock on some of his most significant designs ever realized in the Oak Park studio including the Heller House, Unity Temple, and the Oak Park studio itself. With feedback from an expert and input from your peers, consider the relationship between pattern and structure as you design and build a three-dimensional architectural ornament in plaster.

Session 3: Illustrations & Graphics

Architects and designers are able to communicate feeling, emotions, movement, style, and countless ideas all through sketches and drawings. How do design elements such as color, shape, line and texture impact these visual messages? Inspired by the artists who worked in Wright’s Oak Park studio, including his sister, Maginel Wright Barney, develop your architectural and natural sketching skills using chalk pastels.
