How Wright and Sullivan Pushed the Boundaries of Brick

About

A discussion with William Quam, author of Fire and Clay

Join "Chicago's premiere brick expert" Will Quam, author of Fire and Clay: How Bricks Reveal The Hidden History of Chicago, for a presentation and discussion on the history of brick in the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, and their contemporaries. Rightfully celebrated as architectural innovators, Sullivan and Wright were also daring and boundary pushing in their use of brick, helping to break the simple brick rectangle out of the box. Quam will also discuss how their work set the stage for the modern architecture that followed, and where we can still see it in the brick design of today.

About the Book: In his new book Fire and Clay, Will Quam takes us on journeys to experience the beauty and mystery of Chicago’s buildings. Known for his popular walking tours, Quam pours all his knowledge into the first book of its kind, beautifully illustrated with more than one hundred of his own full-color photographs. Fire and Clay is a remarkable exploration of Chicago's architectural history through the humble brick, giving readers a fresh lens through which to explore the city and find clear connections across its different neighborhoods.
