Avery Coonley House (Frank Lloyd Wright, 1908), Riverside, IL
The vast financial resources of heiress Queene Ferry Coonley and her husband Avery, combined with Wright’s creativity, resulted in one of the most impressive residential designs of Wright’s career.

The Coonley Estate is a National Historic Landmark in Riverside, Illinois and the Riverside Historic District. It is a sprawling complex made up of a house, stable, and gardener’s cottage, situated around a central courtyard. It is one of three multi-building Prairie style complexes designed by Wright, along with the Dana-Thomas House and Darwin D. Martin House. The harmonious blend of site and structure is similar to that of the Frederick C. Robie House in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood.
Today, the meticulously restored home shows the qualities of a mature Prairie residence, including Roman brick walls, built-in shelving, and abundant leaded glass, 80% of which is original. As befits a home of this scale, there are also details seen nowhere else, including exterior porcelain mosaic friezes.
Outside the ground-level playroom, Wright and renowned landscape designer Jens Jensen created the famous lily pool terrace. The pool features geometric contours, along with integrated planting beds and urns, for a seamless blend of the natural and the manmade.

Wright described the property as “the most successful of my houses.”
