Ultimate Plus Friday Excursion
Friday, May 16, 8 am to 6 pm

This year’s Friday excursion takes us to two western suburbs of Chicago, Elmhurst and Oak Brook, Illinois.

The day trip will include tours of two private residences in the Elmhurst Historic District — the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed F.B. Henderson House and the Walter Burley Griffin-designed William H. Emery House, as well as a private tour of the Mayslake Peabody Estate in Oak Brook.

Elmhurst

The F.B. Henderson House was one of the few homes built during Wright’s brief 1901-1902 partnership with Prairie School architect Henry Webster Tomlinson. It boasts original built-ins, three fireplaces, and 80 leaded glass windows. Nearby, the William H. Emery House was the first independent house design by architect Walter Burley Griffin. At the time of commission, Griffin was still employed in Wright’s Oak Park Studio and took on the project as freelance work.

Oak Brook

In 1919, wealthy businessman Francis Stuyvesant Peabody commissioned Chicago firm Marshall and Fox to design a grand Tudor Revival style mansion. The architectural firm was best known for its attention to luxury and was concurrently working on the famed Drake Hotel in Chicago. The mansion features hand-carved staircases and wood panels, floors and archways of marble and limestone, and ornate plaster ceilings. Recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, the home is owned by the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, which recently completed an extensive exterior restoration.

*** The Friday Excursion is a full-day tour with multiple walking experiences. We encourage guests to dress in weather-appropriate clothing and wear comfortable walking shoes. The sites are not wheelchair accessible. Water bottles will be offered on the bus. The order of sites visited is subject to change.
